You know, writers seem to have these little... myths shall we call them, or perhaps common metaphors, or overused expressions is a better phrase. They say things like "his smile lit up his whole face" til it doesn't mean anything anymore, til you can barely imagine it as you read it because it's used too much.

But then you meet a person who looks so solemn and intimidating or contrary and then suddenly they'll smile, and you'll see why such descriptions are overused - simply because they are so apt. It's true what they say, that smiles do light up faces, and that a person will really look so different just smiling, and that's what's so nice about smiling.

Not because it takes less muscles than frowning, seeing as how being "expressionless" would technically take less muscles than either, but because smiles change the face. They change the person and light up not just their face but their entire aura. Smiles can reach right down inside someone and bring out all that's wonderful about them, and then reach right into you and touch your heart.

Have you ever walked along a corridor, thinking of many serious important things or perhaps nothing at all it matters not, and then a friend walks by and says "Hi (insert your name)!" and beams right at you? And you're too startled to do anything but smile and wave and say Hi back, because you're both walking past so fast, too fast for more than a short greeting but slow enough for that smile.

There's nothing else about that meeting, really, nothing worthy of making you feel ..happy, shall we say for words sake, although joy or happiness is perhaps not an accurate enough description of such an emotion. There's no real exchange but that of your smiles - but because of that smile you find that your own smile sticks a little easier, lasts a little longer even after you have passed that friend. Just that smile to know that someone is glad to see you, and to light your own as well, that's enough. That's how contagious smiles are, and how precious and yet how easy to give away. But somehow, I don't think we give away enough. Hm.
